Music Biography
Darren started playing music at the age of 8 for his local brass band and it soon became apparent he had a very special talent. At the age of 13 he moved to Championship Section Band Sherborne Town. His talent was soon recognised and he was rewarded with holding down the position of Principal Tenor Horn player. On an individual basis Darren has competed in many solo competitions around the South West of England, winning lots of trophies including the Cheltenham cup. The highlight of his brass band playing days was being selected to play for the famous Sun Life Band based in Bristol. Sun Life Band at the time was considered to be one of the best bands in the country.
At the age of 17 Darren joined the Royal Marine Band Service beginning a music career spanning 22 years. Darren specialised in learning to play the Clarinet, Saxophone and Violin. He later took up the Flute. Darren had a fantastic time in the Royal Marines travelling extensively around the world. He has played in some of the world’s most prestigious locations including the White House and the Kremlin, this gave him the opportunity to perform in front of many dignitaries including various members of the world’s Royal families, Presidents, Prime Ministers and many more. He has had the pleasure of performing at the World Cup Rugby Final and performed at Wembley for the football FA Cup finals. His experience spans many music genres with performances ranging from Dixieland bands, Quintets to Symphony Orchestras. Darren has studied the Clarinet at the highest level with Leslie Craven who is currently principal Clarinet with the Welsh National Opera.
Darren finished his career with the Royal Marines in 2006 and is currently providing music tuition at 6 schools in the East Devon area. He also runs a very successful teaching practice from his home in Exmouth and visits many pupils within their own homes. Darren will provide tuition to either individuals or provide lessons for small groups of any age. He will provide support and guidance if and when you decide to participate in Graded examinations.
Darren is a very easygoing approachable person who enjoys sharing his knowledge with others. He provides a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, aimed at putting you at ease and providing an environment with which you can maximise your potential. To capitalize on time spent in your lessons with Darren, he suggests a little home practise can go a long way in reaching your musical aspirations.
Darren has a current CRB, which allows him to provide tuition to children.
Darren is married with two boys one of 7 and the other 19 months. Other than his music interest he enjoys weight training at the local gym and running with his Springer spaniel, Monty.
